Westinghouse Electric Co. has formed a joint venture with Chinese company State Nuclear Technology Corp. that will enable Chinese suppliers to make parts and provide services for Westinghouse’s AP1000 nuclear power plants both in China and abroad.
State Nuclear Technology Corp. is the general contractor building the first four AP1000 plants at Sanmen, China. A state-owned enterprise, it was founded in 2007. Westinghouse’s AP1000 is central to its mission to “to form the Chinese brand of nuclear power technology via digestion, absorption and re-innovation of the imported advanced technology,” according to State’s website.
The joint venture, known as SNPTC-WEC Nuclear Power Technical Services (Beijing) Co., Ltd, will also go after business outside of China.
“This joint venture also provides the opportunity for collaboration in new markets,” Westinghouse’s President and CEO Danny Roderick said in a statement. “By forming this joint venture, we have a mechanism for delivering our goods and services together to a broader range of customers, delivering mutual business success.”
