TNB Awards Manjung Contract to Sumitomo Led Consortium

Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has appointed a consortium led by Sumitomo Corp and Daelim Industrial Co Ltd to design, supply, construct and commission a new 1000-megawatt coal fired power plant in Manjung, Perak.

The project, known as the Fast Track Project 3A, was awarded to TNB earlier this month.

“The new coal fired generation facility is targeted to be operational by Oct 1, 2017,” TNB said in a short statement to Bursa Malaysia yesterday.

The main key components of the project including turbine, boilers and generator will be supplied by Hitachi to the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor.

TNB said the new power plant will utilise the ultra super critical boiler technology which is more efficient than the current conventional boilers operating in Malaysia.

The ultra supercritical boiler technology will also reduce carbon dioxide emission, thus lowering the carbon footprint for the Malaysian energy consumers.

“This power plant will meet the mid-term power demand forecast in Peninsular Malaysia for the period after 2017,” it said.
