Sekisui House to Build 25.8 MW Solar Power Plant

Japanese home building company Sekisui House has announced plan to develop a 25.8-megawatt solar power plant on a former golf course in Kagoshima prefecture on the southern island of Kyushu.

The new renewable energy plant will ccost about $92 million to build and supply enough energy to power approximately 7,900 homes. Electricity generated from the installation will be integrated into Japan’s national energy grid at a cost of $1.14 million a year.

Sekisui House expects to complete construction of the project by August 2014.

The company has also completed five other solar projects this year. These projects include a 693-kilowatt facility in Shikama, Miyagi, a 2,428-kW facility in Koga, Ibaraki, and a 1,982-kW project in Kakegawa, Shizuoka. The five projects total 6.7 MW.

Japan’s feed-in-tariff policy has spurred solar development in the country and aided Sekisui House in developing these larger projects. The FiT policy was cut 10 percent this year but stands at $0.38 per kilowatt-hour.
