The 13th of August 2012 saw the first concrete pouring ceremony at the Tanjung Bin power plant. This ceremony supported Malakoff Corp Bhd’s claim that progress is running on schedule for the RM6.5 billion expansion of the coal-fired plant.
“We are confident that Malakoff will be able to deliver the project on schedule and in the best quality based on the solid track record the company has demonstrated over the years,” claimed EC chairman Tan Sri Dr Ahmad Tajuddin Ali.
The expansion on the existing plant in Tanjun Bin is being developed to help tackle the expected rise in demand for electricity in the Iskandar region, from 2010’s demand for 1,479 MW to 2,254 MW by 2020.
The Tanjung plant already produces 2,100 MW using clean coal technology, but the development will use cutting edge supercritical technology to bolster the plant’s capacity to 3,100MW. The new technology will also increase “the plant’s net efficiency by more than three per cent at rated capacity and is able to utilize 100 per cent sub-bituminous coal,” stated a representative from Malakoff.
Malakoff Corp Bhd will sell the extra capacity from the plant to TNB under a 25-year power purchase agreement, whilst the operation and maintenance of the plant will be taken over by a subsidiary of Malakoff, Teknik Janakuasa Sdn Bhd.
Malakoff is Malaysia’s largest IPP; generating 5,020MW from six coal and gas power plants across Perak, Penang, Negri Sembilan and Selangor. Malakoff has recruited Alstom as the EPC contractor, who will support the engineering and commissioning of the plant technology.
This expansion will see the plant in Tanjung Bin take its place as the largest combined coal fired plant in Southeast Asia. Scheduled for completion in 2016, the plant will be ready to provide a plentiful supply of electricity ahead of the projected rise in demand.
