China-based polysilicon firm GCL-Poly has jointly invested in a solar power-generation plant in Datong, Shanxi with Foxconn (Hon Hai). The 310MW plant obtained a license from the China government at the beginning of September. According to Hua Shu, executive director and president of GCL-Poly, the project will begin construction in second-quarter 2013.
GCL-Poly is responsible for providing polysilicon and solar wafers for the project while Foxconn is responsible for solar cells and modules. The project is estimated to cost CNY3.1 billion (US$105 million).
GCL-Poly introduced the S2 multi-silicon solar wafers with efficiency in the range of 17.6-17.9% at PV Taiwan 2012. Shipments of the product began in September and have reached beyond 40MW per month. Sales in the Taiwan market have accounted for 20% of the firm’s total revenues.
