China Longyuan Power Wins 244MW Wind Projects in South Africa

China Longyuan Power has been awarded bids for two wind power projects totaling 244MW by the Department of Energy, South Africa (DOE) under the third round of the South African government’s Renewable Energy Procurement Programme.

To be jointly developed by China Longyuan Power, Mulilo Renewable Energy and Black Community Company, the two projects are the 100MW De Aar Phase I and 144MW De Aar Phase II North District wind power projects located in North Cape Province.

The two projects will feature 67 and 96 wind turbines of 1.5MW each respectively produced by Guodian United Power and associated infrastructure and will supply their output to the Eskom electricity network when complete.

In cooperation with Guodian United, China Longyuan Power, which acts as the controlling shareholder, has won the projects under the support and guidance of China Guodian.

Financed by the local bank consortium of South Africa, the projects form part of the company’s efforts to expand overseas wind power market.

The Ministry of Energy of South Africa has issued three biding rounds so far and the first two rounds witnessed a total wind power bidding capacity of 3,500MW, while the final capacity is 1,196.5MW. The country has launched the bid for renewable energy sources in August 2011
