Australian Local Councils to work out Wastewater Scheme

The Mid Murray Council will partner with the Barossa Council to develop a wastewater scheme in Truro.

The Barossa Council has agreed to receive wastewater from Truro and treat it at Stockwell. The Mid Murray Council has been developing the wastewater scheme, after receiving $100,000 for concept designs last year. Mid Murray chief executive Russell Peate says the councils are still working through the conditions of the agreement.

He says the councils can then look at how much the project will cost and how to finance the scheme.

“We need to look at possibly a loan that’s taken out for a period of time,” he said. “The community pays back the balance but there’s a long way to go between now and then.

“We’d expect that there might be a public meeting with the residents of Truro, hopefully within the next four months.” Mr Peate says it is a good opportunity for the councils to share resources.

He says it will have a better idea of how much the project will cost once it has worked through the conditions with the Barossa Council. “We will get them assessed to see what the end financial result would be, if we went with treatment at the Stockwell facility,” he said.

“That will then be endorsed by council to proceed with the Stockwell treatment proposal and then we would get a further design and costing on that actual scheme.”
