The Indian government has approved the construction of the 300-MW Lakhwad hydroelectric plant in the northern state of Uttarakhand.
The US$724.3 million plant will be developed by Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam (UJVNl), which is a joint venture between the state and India’s central government.
Uttarakhand officials say the state will contribute about a third of Lakhwad’s costs, with the federal government paying the rest.
Construction of the project is reported to be complete within four years.
The Lakhwad hydropower complex is to be located on the Yamuna River in India’s northern region, which has been a hotbed of hydroelectric development in recent months.
